Ways you can help save Orangutans !

This post is made by one of The Red Bells.

"Okay, so my Mom has been donating money to WWF every month for the past 3 years, it is very little but I think the thought that counts. And besides, if you multiply it by 36 months, it is a lot. But then, not many people are willing to spend their money like that even if it is for a good cause because you know how expansive modern lifestyle is. So, I would like to make this program approachable for all ages. Not make it impossible.

I am gonna let you know a few things for you to do, in order to save the Orangutans.

1. Use less paper or anything that comes from trees. Even if it sounds like it has nothing to do with Orangutans, it does, actually. Orangutans' main habitat is the tropical rain forest. If we, keep on cutting down the trees, these creatures will lose their habitats and then, they'll have no where to live. And they'll bother us at our homes, stealing food and what nots. Bear in mind, it is us who took their place, first :)

2. When you see a person harming Orangutans, report immediately. Be it, killing them, torturing them in any way. Report to WWF, or any organizations that has anything to do with animal rights. Orangutans are animals, meaning they are too, God's creature. We don't have the right to take their lives away from them. Or harm them in any way.

3. Adopt them. No, not take them to live with you. But, be their owner. You can visit them every week and bring food, basic things. You know how, Orangutans will get attached to you if you love them. They will love you back ! Now, that's a good thing for everyone to have ;)

More Fun Facts about Orangutans

#1: Orangutans arm's stretch out longer than their bodies, over 7 ft. from fingertip to fingertip !

#2: Male orangutans will develop cheek pads when they reach 15 years old, which female orangutans find it attractive.

#3: When males are fighting, they charge at each other and break branches. if that doesn't scare one of them away, they grapple and bite each other.

#4: Like humans, orangutans have opposable thumbs. their big toes are also opposable.

#5: Orangutans predators include tigers, leopards and even large pythons.

#6: About 97% of an orangutan's genetic makeup is the same as a human's.

#7: Orangutans live to be about 35 years old in the wild; in the captivity they can live 50 years or more.

#8: Orangutans can weigh up to 200 pounds.

#9: Orangutan is the only strictly arboreal ape and is actually the largest tree living mammal in the world.

#10: Male orangutans have throat sac which is used to make a very notable and recognizable call that echoes through the forest. This is called 'Long Call' and is used to locate and advertise their presence to females or warn other males away.

NOTE: An animal species is said to have opposable thumbs if the thumb is capable of bending in such a way that it can touch all the other digits on the hand. It plays a huge part in making tools back then.

Update #9 Zoo Taiping

"Since it's the first weekend of puasa, me and apart of my family felt the mood to go to the zoo at my hometown, call us crazy but we actually had a lot fun ! Due to the nice weather there, we had the energy to walk round the whole zoo after seeing the Orangutans there, of course. So, in taiping there are 2 orang utans. Their scientific name is Pongo pygmaeus. They're so cute, especially the fact that they will tend to do a little pose whenever a person comes near them. Eventhough this zoo has little amount of Orangutans, I am still satisfied with it since the Orangutans are in good hands with good trainers taking care of them and a very fine place to live in :)

All about Ken Allen, The Superstar!

Ken Allen, 1971-2000

As y'all already informed by us, Orangutans are very intelligent, in fact, they are considered the most intelligent animal because they share 97% of human DNA. (WOW!)

So to prove at how intelligent Orangutans are, we are gonna tell you about Ken Allen.

"Ken Allen was the name given to a Bornean orangutan at the San Diego Zoo. He became one of the most popular animals in the history of the San Diego Zoo because of his many successful escapes from his enclosures.

Ken Allen was born in captivity at the San Diego Zoo in 1971. During the 1980s, Ken Allen gained worldwide attention for a series of three escapes from his enclosure, which had been thought to be escape-proof. He would unscrew bolts with his fingers, reach around to unlatch things, climb up a steep incline by the back of his enclosure to slip over a wall, and so on.

During his escapes, Ken Allen would peacefully stroll around the zoo looking at other animals, and never acted violently or aggressively towards zoo patrons or other animals. Zookeepers were initially stymied over how Ken Allen had managed to escape.

They began surveillance of his enclosure to try to catch him in the act, only to find that Ken Allen seemed to be aware that he was being watched for that very purpose. This forced zookeepers to go "undercover", posing as tourists to learn Ken Allen's escape route, but Ken Allen wasn't fooled.

Moreover, other orangutans began following Ken Allen's lead and began escaping from the enclosure. Zoo officials eventually hired experienced rock climbers to find every finger, toe, and foothold within the enclosure and spent $40,000 to eliminate them.

Ken Allen's ability to "outwit" his keepers, as well as his docile demeanor during his escapes, resulted in fame and adoration from zoo patrons, and numerous fan clubs, bumper stickers, and songs were created as a tribute to the wily orangutan.

Ken Allen developed cancer and was euthanized in December 2000, according to the San Diego Zoo's website. He was 29 years old."

Update #8 Badge Selling Day, read all about it!

So today, we had a badge selling day at school. There are, like y'all know, 3 designs and we've also made a petition against harming Orangutans' habitats and lives.

The reason why we chose to sell badges is because students/teachers can wear it everyday to show their support. So please, wear the badges everyday even when the campaign is over.

Why start at school?

Our answer is, Why not? Hehehe, ok real answer below..

Because what's the point of telling to strangers if our own school mates does not know about this endangered animal? What's the point of going to public places and tell it to people we don't know when the people we see everyday does not have a clue about what we are trying to do?

Like they say, start small and then it'll get bigger.

Anyway, back to the badge selling day,

They will poke twigs into holes to catch insects.

They will chew up leaves and use them as sponges.

They will use branches and sticks to test the depth of water before entering it.
(This is really smart!)

Mosquitoes bother orangutans just like they do humans and they will use branches like fly swatters to swish them away.

Baby orangutans cry when they’re hungry, whimper when they’re hurt and smile at their mothers.
(Just like human babies!)

Orangutans can make approximately 13 to 15 different vocalizations.

When it rains or the sun is hot, an orangutan will hold a leafy branch or two over its head to protect itself from getting wet or overheated.
