Update #9 Zoo Taiping
"Since it's the first weekend of puasa, me and apart of my family felt the mood to go to the zoo at my hometown, call us crazy but we actually had a lot fun ! Due to the nice weather there, we had the energy to walk round the whole zoo after seeing the Orangutans there, of course. So, in taiping there are 2 orang utans. Their scientific name is Pongo pygmaeus. They're so cute, especially the fact that they will tend to do a little pose whenever a person comes near them. Eventhough this zoo has little amount of Orangutans, I am still satisfied with it since the Orangutans are in good hands with good trainers taking care of them and a very fine place to live in :)

All about Ken Allen, The Superstar!
As y'all already informed by us, Orangutans are very intelligent, in fact, they are considered the most intelligent animal because they share 97% of human DNA. (WOW!)
So to prove at how intelligent Orangutans are, we are gonna tell you about Ken Allen.
"Ken Allen was the name given to a Bornean orangutan at the San Diego Zoo. He became one of the most popular animals in the history of the San Diego Zoo because of his many successful escapes from his enclosures.
Ken Allen was born in captivity at the San Diego Zoo in 1971. During the 1980s, Ken Allen gained worldwide attention for a series of three escapes from his enclosure, which had been thought to be escape-proof. He would unscrew bolts with his fingers, reach around to unlatch things, climb up a steep incline by the back of his enclosure to slip over a wall, and so on.
During his escapes, Ken Allen would peacefully stroll around the zoo looking at other animals, and never acted violently or aggressively towards zoo patrons or other animals. Zookeepers were initially stymied over how Ken Allen had managed to escape.
They began surveillance of his enclosure to try to catch him in the act, only to find that Ken Allen seemed to be aware that he was being watched for that very purpose. This forced zookeepers to go "undercover", posing as tourists to learn Ken Allen's escape route, but Ken Allen wasn't fooled.
Moreover, other orangutans began following Ken Allen's lead and began escaping from the enclosure. Zoo officials eventually hired experienced rock climbers to find every finger, toe, and foothold within the enclosure and spent $40,000 to eliminate them.
Ken Allen's ability to "outwit" his keepers, as well as his docile demeanor during his escapes, resulted in fame and adoration from zoo patrons, and numerous fan clubs, bumper stickers, and songs were created as a tribute to the wily orangutan.
Ken Allen developed cancer and was euthanized in December 2000, according to the San Diego Zoo's website. He was 29 years old."
(Information gathered about Ken Allen from Wikipedia and San Diego Zoo's Website)

Update #8 Badge Selling Day, read all about it!
The reason why we chose to sell badges is because students/teachers can wear it everyday to show their support. So please, wear the badges everyday even when the campaign is over.
Why start at school?
Our answer is, Why not? Hehehe, ok real answer below..
Because what's the point of telling to strangers if our own school mates does not know about this endangered animal? What's the point of going to public places and tell it to people we don't know when the people we see everyday does not have a clue about what we are trying to do?
Like they say, start small and then it'll get bigger.
Anyway, back to the badge selling day,
Pictures say a thousand words! Here are some as promised we will feature you,

We thank everyone that purchased our badges, signed the petition and help promote our team!
We've sold 80 badges so far and we've collected 93 signatures! Be proud that you are apart of it, people! And, to those of you who haven't got a chance to purchase our badges or sign the petition, please let us know as we can put aside some badges for y'all!
Salam Ramadhan to all of out Muslim supporters, take this opportunity to do some good deeds as you will be blessed in thousands of good ways throughout this holy month!
We are also on Facebook. Please join our group, The Red Bells for Orangutans. Thanks!
You know it. I know it. We all know it. We are their only hope.

Update #5 Our plans
We've come up with a plan to sell tshirts and badges originally, but the tshirts selling was cancelled due to not only the budget but also our time. So instead, we will only be selling badges, not sure when will it all be done but we've finalised our designs, so it'll be soon!
Then, we would like to do a video but haven't yet start due to our school works like pop quizes, presentations and of course homeworks. I'm pretty sure you can understand :)
There are some other activities that we would like to do and we will blog about it as soon as it is done. We will sure announce what, when and where will our next activity be because our supporters are the ones that can make our activities happen.
I know it. You know it. We all know it. We are their only hope.

To them, 'The End of the World' is near

They're trying to reach out to us. They're pleading for our help.
Doing this campaign started off as just an idea. An idea that the 4 of us came up with during the event held about Orangutans in the school hall. But after several meetings, everything seems to be realistic when there are actually people who always keep track of the activities we do. And to all of those who support us and are willing to help, thank you :)This campaign have widen people's knowledge on Orangutans and opened their eyes about the extinction of the species. Knowing that there are little of Orangutans left on this Earth, everyone should know that each person conducts a huge role in the Orangutans' lives. Maybe with just a step or two, this dear species could survive this 'war'.
All you need to do is, participate in all of our activities and join in the fun by giving us opinions and ideas in ways for us to help save the Orangutans.

Update #3 Our day spent at the zoo

We did ask whether or not we can take pictures and be closer to the orangutans but we weren't allowed. But the orangutan in the glass cage? Yeah, he is soo adorable! We waved at him and he came straight to us to let us take a picture of him. Believe it or not, we even saw a glimpse of smile :D
Friday, August 7, 2009
With nowhere to live, how will they survive?
Before, we didnt pay enough attention to these poor creatures. The creatures that need our help the most. The type of species that share 97% of DNA as us, humans.
We cut trees and burn forests, leaving their homes destroyed. For what? For humans to build new developments across the country and to race for wealth. In order to achieve this so called wealth, of course, people who are blinded with the thoughts of fame and glory would do just anything. This race for wealth have turned a lot of people into such cruel humanbeings that they no longer care about this particular animal.
Do we really want Orangutans to just be buried in memories and be the future's history? Dont we want these Orangutans to be known and seen by our next generation and so forth?
What they need now is people to realise how important Orangutans are in this economically rising state of era. Though they're just animals, they play an important role in this world. We cant dominate their lives in order for us humans to strive forward.
The Red Bells' aim is to give public awareness about these soon to extinct species. We believe that small steps lead us to a huge impact in the end.

Essentials About Orangutans

I'm going to share a little information about our dearest friends, the orangutans.
Did you know that the Orangutans are large apes that live in southeast Asia, on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra? These apes mostly live in trees, they are arboreal, and swing from branch to branch using their arms. Just so you know, Orangutans are an endangered species. They are decreasing in numbers quickly as they lose habitat to people. Further aggravating the problem, baby orangutans are caught and sold around the world as pets.
So please please please , take this matter very seriously.
ANATOMY ;
Orangutans have a large, bulky body, a thick neck, very long, strong arms, short, bowed legs, and no tail. Orangutans are about 2/3 the size of the gorilla.
a) Hair:
They are mostly covered with long reddish-brown hair.
b) The Head:
The orangutan has a large head with a prominent mouth area. Adult males have large cheek flaps (which get larger as the ape ages).
c) Senses:
Orangutans have senses very similar to ours, including hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch.
d) Hands and Feet:
Orangutan hands are very much like ours; they have four long fingers plus an opposable thumb. Their feet have four long toes plus an opposable big toe. Orangutans can grasp things with both their hands and their feet. The largest males have an arm span of about 7.5 feet (2.3 m).
INTELLIGENCE AND LANGUAGE ;
Orangutans are very intelligent. They have been known to use found objects as tools; for example, they use leaves as umbrellas to keep the rain from getting them wet. They also use leaves as cups to help them drink water.
DIET ;
Orangutans are omnivores (they eat both plants and animals) but are mostly herbivorous (plants comprise most of their diet). They eat fruit (their favorite food), leaves, seeds, tree bark, plant bulbs, tender plant shoots, and flowers. They also eat insects and small animals (like birds and small mammals).
SIZE ;
Orangutans are about 2/3 the size of the gorilla.
female ; height : 2.6-3.5 ft
weight : 50 kg
male ; height : 3.2-4.5 ft
weight : 90 kg
If you find this information interesting and would like for us to post more about Orangutans, please let us know!

The Malay word orangutan means "person of the forest." These long-haired, orangish primates, found only in Sumatra and Borneo.
Did you ever notice that when Orangutans stand, their hands nearly touch the ground?
Well... Orangutans have an enormous armspan;
A male may stretch his arms some 7 feet (2.1 meters) from fingertip to fingertip.
Orangutans' arms are well suited to their lifestyle because they spend much of their time (some 90 percent) in the trees of their tropical rain forest home. They even sleep aloft in nests of leafy branches. They use large leaves as umbrellas and shelters to protect themselves from the common rains.
This means that trees play a very important role in Orangutans' lives. Stop cutting them!
Did you know that the male Orangutans are loners. As they move through the forest they make plenty of rumbling, howling calls to ensure that they stay out of each other's way. The "long call" can be heard 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) away.
Uuk Uuk Aak Aak!
Mothers and their young, however, share a strong bond. Infants will stay with their mothers for some six or seven years until they develop the skills to survive on their own. Female orangutans give birth only once every eight years, meaning they're different than cats and dogs, they don't give birth 6 at once every 3 months, they're like humans, one at a time.
The famous deforestation and other human activities, such as hunting, have placed the orangutan in danger of extinction.
Ask yourself,
Do you want your kids, you grandchildren, your kids' grandchildren to not know that Orangutans ever existed?
Do you want the next generation to only see pictures and wonder what Orangutans look like real life?
Do you want Orangutans to only live in our memories, these smart creatures, be in story books as a tale and no longer a true life story?
If you answer No, to all the above, then do your part by supporting us The Red Bells. Participate in all of our activities, sign our petition, purchase our badges, give us your feedback.
You know it. I know it. We all know it. We are their only hope.
