More Fun Facts about Orangutans


#1: Orangutans arm's stretch out longer than their bodies, over 7 ft. from fingertip to fingertip !

#2: Male orangutans will develop cheek pads when they reach 15 years old, which female orangutans find it attractive.
#3: When males are fighting, they charge at each other and break branches. if that doesn't scare one of them away, they grapple and bite each other.

#4: Like humans, orangutans have opposable thumbs. their big toes are also opposable.

#5: Orangutans predators include tigers, leopards and even large pythons.

#6: About 97% of an orangutan's genetic makeup is the same as a human's.

#7: Orangutans live to be about 35 years old in the wild; in the captivity they can live 50 years or more.

#8: Orangutans can weigh up to 200 pounds.

#9: Orangutan is the only strictly arboreal ape and is actually the largest tree living mammal in the world.

#10: Male orangutans have throat sac which is used to make a very notable and recognizable call that echoes through the forest. This is called 'Long Call' and is used to locate and advertise their presence to females or warn other males away.

NOTE: An animal species is said to have opposable thumbs if the thumb is capable of bending in such a way that it can touch all the other digits on the hand. It plays a huge part in making tools back then.
